Inferences are conclusions you make based on evidence and your own reasoning. When reading, making inferences is about using clues and your background knowledge to figure out things the author does not directly tell you.

Directions:
- Read the short story "The Scarlet Ibis" linked below.
- As you read, write four observation/inference notes on your note sheet.
- Use the "Inferences Guide" to help you determine what types of things to make inferences about. Use the symbols provided to categorize the notes you write. You MUST make inferences about character, theme, plot, or symbol development.
