Paraphrase Assignment
Journal
Think about this:
- Is plagiarism only a problem in schools? Where else is plagiarism a common problem?
- Do you think it’s ok for musicians to borrow from other artists to create their songs?
- Do you think at some point it’s impossible not to borrow from other artists (i.e. there’s nothing new left)?

- I will read an article out loud to you, and you must take notes on the article without looking at it yourself.
- Write a 4 sentence summary of the article without looking at the text.
- Compare your summary to the person sitting next to you.
- Compare your summary to at least two different people sitting in front/behind you.
- Write down one thing you forgot to include in your summary (add this below your summary).
- Submit your summary!
Homework Assignment
In this assignment, you will read an article about the history of plagiarism.
- Make a copy of the document.
- Paraphrase (restate) each of the highlighted ideas in this article. Pretend that you are writing a paper, and you want to include the highlighted ideas in your work without using any direct quotations.
- Remember, a paraphrase means that you express the meaning of the original text using different words AND sentence structure. It is best to use vocabulary words that you already know, but you may find that you need to look up synonyms to help you write.
- You do not add citations after your paraphrases.
- Submit to Turnitin before class begins on Tuesday. This is your first graded assignment for unit 3.
