Claim: a point you are trying to prove, which is based on the INFERENCES you make from the text.
- Example claim: "Snow white has a shy personality."
Evidence: the observations and examples from the text that help show why your claims are true.
- Example evidence: "When Snow White meets the prince, she runs away and hides."
Explanation: the reasoning you give that explains why your evidence supports your claim.
- Example explanation: "The action of running away to hide indicates that Snow White does not want to interact with new people, a common behavior seen in people with shy personalities."
Thesis Statement: the sentence that summarizes the main (overall) claim of your essay, which you must explain in more detail over the course of the essay using evidence.
- Example thesis: "The author shows that Snow White is a shy person based on her actions, her words, and the way other characters react to her."

Note:
If you were writing a longer, essay-length literary analysis, your thesis statement should be more detailed. For example, you might write something like, "The use of certain plot elements in Snow White, such as plot twists, omitting information, and conflict resolution, help readers understand that good intentions lead to good outcomes, while evil intentions do not produce desired results." OR, "The use of plot events, characterization, and symbolism in Snow White all help readers understand that good intentions lead to good outcomes, while evil intentions do not produce desired results."
